China Mobile's celebrating its recent TD-SCDMA 3G network launch by giving away free 3G handsets to members of the Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee. The network is running in trial-form in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Qinhuangdao, according to Wang Jianzhou, CEO of China Mobile. And, to give the network some added trial-time, China Mobile is giving away 15,000 handsets that should work with China's own special flavor of 3G technology. The upcoming Olympic games is something of a proving ground for China to show the world how far its come in terms of infrastructure, quality of life, and, ahem, censorship. And, the Games are a perfect place for China Mobile to demonstrate its 3G TD-SCDMA network. It couldn't hurt to have an additional 15,000 handsets giving China Mobile's 3G network a good going-over prior to the network's global debut. China Mobile most certainly doesn't want to have their network embarrass them on the world stage. For China Mobile's sake, they might want to consider adding the iPhone to their network if they really want to impress foreign Olympic Games fans.
