Virgin Mobile USA offers over-the-air self-activation - ALL phones should be self-activated

Who doesn’t love waiting? Better yet, who doesn’t love waiting in a cellphone retailer’s store while a team of bumbling sales-reps and customer service advisers work feverishly to get your newly acquired mobile phone activated on a particular network? What’s that you say? You cringe at the thought of waiting for your next cellphone? Well, following on the industry-pioneering work of Apple and the iPhone , Virgin Mobile USA is rolling out over-the-air self-activating mobile phones. You see, Virgin Mobile, like Apple, realized that people hate waiting to have their new phone activated. The popular MVNO is working with Telespree to pre-program their hardware offerings to not only cut back on customer-service costs, but also activate itself on Virgin Mobile USA’s network - all without the need for any bumbling sales reps or over-the-phone activation assistance. If Virgin Mobile can do it, there should be no reason why the big dogs in the industry couldn’t roll out similar services. Robots clean our floors, allow remote surgery, explore Mars - but the top wireless carriers in the business still rely on half-informed employees to simply activate a cellphone? The iPhone is a great example of how mobile phone activation should be - enter your own credit information while you kick back with a martini in the comfort of your own home. Oh wait, maybe big-box retailers should offer full-bar service with every new phone purchase. Yea, that’s the ticket. The one thing about the iPhone v1.1.2 jailbreak was that it only worked with legit, AT&T activated iPhones on Intel-based Mac machines. Well that’s all changed with the newest update to the iPhone v1.1.2 jailbreak. The new jailbreak solution will now activate (allows you to bypass the “Connect to iTunes” screen and use the iPhone without an AT&T contract) your iPhone and works with PowerPC-based Mac machines. If you still haven’t jailbroken (jailbreaked?) your iPhone v1.1.2, here’s your chance. O2's iPhone activation system buckling under pressure

Remember when the iPhone launched in the States ? Remember how AT&T’s activation servers buckled under the massive deluge of launch-day iPhone owners trying to get their iPhone activated? Well, it seems activation-problems have crossed the pond and are afflicting O2’s iPhone activation servers. With O2 selling iPhones like it’s nobody’s business , we’re not too surprised to hear that their activation system is having trouble handling the load. Some newly-minted iPhone owners in the UK have reported that the activation process crashes after they enter their credit-card information in the iTunes-based activation process. The problems seem to be rooted in O2’s activation servers and not from Apple or iTunes. Apparently, the activation woes stem from low-credit users trying to activate their iPhone. You see, the activation system will check the user’s credit and require a £100 deposit payment if the user’s credit-score is not up to par. The activation system seems to be having trouble dealing with processing this particular payment. We’d love to get an idea for how widespread this problem is. So, if any of you have experienced iPhone-activation problems in the UK, please drop us a line.
