Let's see, HTC has its own UI (TouchFLO and TouchFLO 3D) running on top of Windows Mobile, Gigabyte and Sony Ericsson are working on something similar, and now ASUS is joining the pack with its Glide — in its release ASUS doesn't specifies on top of which mobile OS Glide will run, however all their [...]

announcements | asus | asus p560 | devices | windows mobile | windows mobile 6.1

ASUS isn't showing any signs of slowing down its Windows Mobile product lineup anytime soon. The ASUS P560 may be a bit overshadowed by the company's Lamborghini-branded ASUS ZX1, but that doesn't mean the ASUS P560 isn't a true powerhouse by any means. The quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM ASUS P560 is powered by Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 [...]

This mini-sized offering from Asus has finally made its way to the FCC's labs. Launched back at CeBIT 2008, the Asus P320 Galaxi Mini was destined to bring some mid-range love to Asus's Windows Mobile handset portfolio. And, with the FCC giving the Asus P320 Galaxi Mini the go-ahead, we may just see this diminutive, [...]

ASUS P750 hacked to do VGA resolution

asus | asus p750 | asusp750 | p750 | qvga | vga | windows mobile

The ASUS P750 has been living a double life of sorts. I told you a little while ago that the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional smartphone was moonlighting as a VGA-display super-hero in an effort to break-out from its daily ho-hum existence as a mild-mannered QVGA commoner. It was sort of sad that the ASUS P750 had [...]

It's not every day that we hear of gadgets sporting unannounced features, nevermind some unannounced badass hardware. That wold be like buying a 250GB hard drive and tearing open the packaging to find that you have 1TB of storage! Well, that sort of thing seems to be happening to Asus P750 owners. Some users are [...]

UK: Asus Eee PC pops up on my high street - but only for a day!

(Pic courtesy of my favourite SIM-free Mobile/PC online retailer, Expansys) I was perusing my local retailer of electrical goods the other day, and happened across the Asus Eee PC - now I know it's not anything particularly new, but it IS an intruiging little chap, especially as it was sat with a bunch of other (seemingly [...]

ASUS, iRiver to sell Unlocked smartphones in U.S.

announcements | asus | asus smartphones | ces 2008 @ las vegas | iriver smartphones | unlocked cellphones | unlocked smartphones

I’m not sure how we’ve missed this, but during the CES - ASUS and iRiver announced they’ll start selling their smartphones unlocked in the U.S. The idea is to, at least initially, try to grab a small piece of the market using the existing PC sales channels and later who knows — if people get excited about the ASUS’ and/or iRiver’s devices, maybe struck a deal with some carrier. That being said, if something like that happens — and no, we don’t have any inside information — AT&T and T-Mobile could be the only prospects considering the fact that both iRiver and ASUS make GSM-based phones (as opposed to CDMA, which is used by Verizon and Sprint). Actually, iRiver still has to make a single device , but they said it’s going to use the world’s dominant GSM technology, meaning that the company which is known for its media players may also export its handsets to other parts of the world. Anyway, I just wanted to point that the new entrants to the mobile phones market seem to have a hard time negotiating win-win deals with U.S. based carriers. It’s a shame, don’t you think? Full release follows after the jump. PRESS RELEASE - Asus and iRiver are well-known brands in the U.S., thanks to Asus’ line of PCs and iRiver’s MP3 players. Here at CES, they both announced they’re diving into the U.S. cell phone market with a series of unlocked GSM phones that will probably be sold through their existing PC retail channels. iRiver’s single GSM phone, targeted for the end of this year, has more than a little of the iPhone to it. Like the iPhone, the “iRiver GSM phone” (they don’t have a flashy name yet) has a big, 3-inch, 480×272 touch screen and no keypad; you navigate by touching, flicking or swiping the screen. The icons in the Linux-based phone’s UI even look like the iPhone’s. The phone also appears to have 4-Gbytes of flash storage, music and video players with Rhapsody music support, a two-megapixel camera with camcorder, an Adobe Flash player, GPS and mobile TV of some variety. The phone’s software was very unfinished, however. Even the wireless connections aren’t fixed: it might have Wi-Fi or might not. One thing’s clear, though – it will work on high-speed 3G cellular networks like the one run by AT&T. (As a GSM phone, it won’t work with Sprint or Verizon.) “It would be ridiculous for the phone to be 2G or 2.5G at this time,” said iRiver spokesman Owen Kwon. Kwon added that the phone will be “more affordable” than the iPhone. Asus’ phones are much closer to market – the first one is just two weeks away, according to Asus spokesman Charlton Ho. Asus already makes phones for Asia, but the GPS-powered Windows Mobile 6 Professional phone known as the P527 will be its first full-scale launch in the U.S. The P527 is a relatively wide, candy-bar style handset with a SirfStar III GPS running Asus’ own mapping and driving directions application. It’s based on a 200-MHz TI OMAP 850 processor and has a 2.6-inch, 320×240 display. The phone packs fast Wi-Fi 802.11g and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, but slow USB 1.1 for connection to PCs. It’s a quad-band EDGE phone, so it’s ready for AT&T and T-Mobile. The P527 comes with all the usual Windows Mobile applications, such as Pocket Office. But Asus has also added an FM radio, business card recognizing application, backup program and RSS reader. They also wrote their own power management software which should help extend the device’s battery life. The phone will sell for $499, Ho said. “The iPhone is changing peoples’ perspectives,” Ho said. “People are now more willing to pay for their phones.” The P527 will be followed by the Galaxy Mini, a more “woman-focused” smartphone that’s small, slim and pink, Ho said. The Galaxy Mini will run the latest version of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software and ASUS’ GPS system, and should be available by the end of March, Ho said. If ASUS’ phones are successful here, they may bring in other models such as a Lamborghini-branded phone, he said. ASUS makes a Lamborghini-branded laptop that’s currently available in the US. ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Dell to sell unlocked Nokia smartphones?Asus updates the P526 with Asus P527 - ok, greatiRiver preparing to launch its own handset; Shows some very "familiar interface" on CESAsus Z810 young people's phoneASUS to provide Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for its PDAs

Asus M930W Communicator unveiled; Ready to compete with Nokia E90?

asus | asus communicator | asus m930w | devices | nokia e90 competitor | windows mobile | windows mobile communicator

Roughly a month and a half ago, we reported Asus is working on the Communicator-like device called M930 . Now we have more information about it, including specs and the first images thanks to the French site GPS&Co. Apparently, the upcoming device will use Marvell’s PXA270M 520 MHz CPU, boasting such specs as tri-band GSM, GPRS, EDGE, and HSDPA connectivity support, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, WiFi, 256 MB ROM and 128 Mb of RAM, and of course the microSD slot that can read MicroSDHC cards. One thing we’re not sure is whether the upcoming device also sports the GPS receiver, although we wouldn’t be surprised to see it on-board as well. As expected, Windows Mobile 6 is running the show… Finally, from the photos we got, we must note a single thing we don’t like. That’s the internal screen, which is kinda small considering how much space there is left on the flip side. Hopefully, we’ll see this improved in the future upgrades. And now on with the mentioned photos. Apparently, Taiwan-based Asustek will be launching the Windows Mobile 6 powered Communicator device, M930, somewhere in Q1 2007. According to French site Mobinaute , the upcoming device will have a shape similar to the one of the Nokia Communicator series, sporting two screens - external for basic phone functionality and the bigger internal alongside the full QWERTY keyboard. As for the specs, we should expect virtually everything - including HSDPA, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3.2 MP camera with auto-focus, FM tuner, 256MB of Flash ROM and 180MB of RAM. In addition, the PDA phone will run on Marvel PXA27x 520 MHz CPU and will utilize the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile OS - Windows Mobile 6.
