advancement | announcements | battery | breakthrough | capacity | increase | li ion | lithium ion | research | technologiesPortable electronics are in store for some longer up-times as Lithium-ion (Li-ION) batteries (the predominant power source technology used today) become increasingly more efficient and longer-lasting. Following on the previous research-breakthrough that yielded ten times greater power storage capacity by replacing a Li-ION power-cell’s Carbon anode with Silicon, Hitachi has announced that they’ve created a [...]

New TSA regulations for spare batteries on airplanes - ridiculous
announcements | battery | exploding | ion | lithium | spare | tsaFile this one under “Idiot Bureaucrats and their rules.” The great thing about bureaucracy is that there’s no end to the supply of nonsensical, needlessly complex, potential harmful regulations enforced under the guise of making life safer for society. Since we’re all apparently incapable of keeping those spare lithium-ion batteries safely stowed during your flight to “wherever,” the TSA has come up with new guidelines on how to carry those extra batteries. In light of all the recent lithium-ion battery explosions , the TSA has decided to take action. You can’t check your spare batteries anymore – that is, unless you have too many spare batteries. But, “too many spare batteries” is defined as the number of grams of lithium you happen to have on your person. So, if you happen to be carrying over the designated limit of lithium gram-age (you do know just how many grams of lithium each of your batteries contains, right?), you can carry the spares on board. Oh, and you can carry-on those spare batteries if they’re installed in some sort of device (external charger, for example). Confused yet? We’re sure we could abide by these new rules if we really tried. But, seriously, are we going to go through the trouble when TSA agents probably won’t know what to do anyway. Has anyone ever taken a look at TSA agents? We’re pretty sure they not exactly up-to-date on just how grams of lithium a particular battery contains - that is, if they can even decipher the TSA’s new rules. Color us annoyed. Maybe we should just stop reporting all those gadget-related mishaps, that way the TSA will never hear about it and they won’t have to “protect” us with retarded regulations. iPhone battery replacement DIY: Video Edition
apple | battery | diy | iphone | replacement | tutorial | videoWe’ve seen a good amount of iPhone DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects out there, but this is one of the slicker DIY tutorials. The resident iPhone fanatics at GearLive have posted a DIY video detailing the iPhone’s battery replacement procedure. You shouldn’t really need to replace your battery, seeing as how your iPhone couldn’t be more than 6 months old. But hey, if you’re going to do it, we’re not going to stop you. Check out the iPhone battery replacement DIY video below - especially prior to any battery-replacement shenanigans you have planned. Seriously though, make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into before you open up your iPhone (and void-out your iPhone). It would be a shame if you ended up with an iBrick just to squeeze a few more minutes of up-time out of your iPhone. South Korean man killed by co-worker's drill, not LG cellphone
announcements | battery | cellphone | exploding | korea | lg | mobile | phone | southWe thought it a little odd that an “exploding” cellphone battery could inflict the kind of physical damage that killed that South Korean quarry worker , who we only know as Seo (his last name). Broken ribs and spine aren’t the type of injuries we’d expect from a faulty mobile phone’s battery. And, with this breaking news, LG has been vindicated (and their assertion of the impossibility of an exploding mobile phone battery has been corroborated). It seems that Seo was not killed by his LG mobile phone’s battery, but rather by his co-worker’s drilling machine. The co-worker, identified only by his surname, Kwon, confessed today that he backed the drilling rig into Seo. He admitted to having fabricated the “exploding cellphone.” Kwon told Min Kang-gi, a detective in Chungju, that he used the cellphone battery as a diversion to throw off investigators. Interestingly, the co-worker claims to have not set fire to, or melted, the LG mobile phone in Seo’s shirt pocket. We presume the damage to the mobile phone was caused by the accident. LG has released a statement, saying that “LG rigorously tests all the products not only for functionality and design, but safety as well.” So, for all of you out there with an LG mobile phone in your pocket or purse, there’s no need to worry that your LG phone will end up killing you - just keep an eye out for co-workers with industrial machines. Shake your mobile phone to 'feel' how full it is - just give it a 'Shoogle'
announcements | battery | can | cellphone | life | liquid | mobile | phone | research | shake | shoogle | technologiesHow full is your mobile phone’s battery? Do you have voice or text messages awaiting your reply? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just pick up your phone and give it a quick shake to get an idea for just how “full” your phone is. In much the same way that you’d shake that can of soda-pop to see if there’s anything left inside, Shoogle wants to use a combination of accelerometers, vibrations, and sounds to bring that experience to your cellphone. Shoogle is developing technology that would allow a mobile phone user to simply pick up and shake their handset to check for messages and remaining battery life. A full battery would presumably feel like a container full of water, whereas a nearly empty battery might feel like an almost empty beverage container. Unread messages sound like balls in a coffee can - the more messages you have, the more “balls” you feel rattling around inside. The idea is still in the development stages, so don’t expect your next phone to feature some sort of quick-shake feature. But, you can get an idea for how this system works in the video below.
