If you just can’t justify the extra $20 a month that you’re spending for slow EDGE speeds, there’s good news. You can drop the data plan from your iPhone rate plan and save the $20. Of course, you’ll be paying through the nose for every kilobyte that you download from thereon, but if you’re almost always in range of a WiFi hotspot, this could be a great money-saver. Of course, without the iPhone data plan, you’re Visual Voicemail feature will be as good as dead. Such is the compromise that penny-pinchers must make. To give hte data-portion of your iPhone’s rate plan, just log into your online account management - AT&T myAccount. Find the “Add / Manage Features” section and uncheck the box next to the “IPHONE DATA” option. Oh, and keep in mind that you’ll also lose the free 200 SMS text messages - so you’ll be paying through the nose for SMS text messages if you don’t get an additional text-messaging package. We’re definitely going to be holding onto our free SMS text messages, Visual Voicemail, and unlimited EDGE data. But, if you need to save up a bit more dough for the possibility of a 3G iPhone next year, an extra $20 savings every month could be a big help. Vodafone's fights iPhone defection by taking customer service offline

We love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, but they usually amount to nothing more than paranoid thinking. Then again, sometimes the coincidences can’t be ignored. The Inquirer’s got a conspiracy theory that’s just too juicy to dismiss off-hand. The theory goes something like this:

  • iPhone launches in Europe
  • Vodafone is not an iPhone carrier
  • Vodafone wants to prevent huge customer-base losses to the iPhone
  • Vodafone takes customer service offline to prevent customer cancelations
Vodafone’s customer service line for customer cancellations is dead - it’s been dead since the iPhone’s launch last Friday. The helpful recorded message blames a “system fault” and kindly suggests that the customer call back later. Is Vodafone fighting cancellation-spikes due to iPhone-defectors by taking down its service-cancellation hotline? Or are they just experiencing a legit system bug? We don’t know for sure, but it’s fun to wax conspiratorially.
