Fancy an iPhone but hate the prospect of giving in to that cult-of-Apple or jumping network-ship for AT&T? Well, if you’re a Sprint or Telus customer, then you likely already enjoying the CDMA alternative to the iPhone, the HTC Touch. Unfortunately, if you are on Alltel’s network, you’ll just have to find another way to quench your sleek, touchscreen thirst. That is, until the HTC Touch is offered on your particular flavor of CDMA. Well, you may not have to wait much longer. It looks like Alltel is set to pick up the HTC Touch – and it should hit your network in about a week. But, playing on the sharper edge of mobile technology doesn’t come cheap – expect to shell out a penny shy of $200 with 2-year contract and applicable rebates, or about $500 outright (sans contract). Following on MetroPCS’s successful launch in the c oveted Los Angeles market , the “unlimited” carrier has announced that they’ll be working with Alcatel-Lucent to bring 3G data service to seven key markets in the US. MetroPCS won the 3G spectrum in last year’s AWS spectrum auction, and will be upgrading their CDMA network from 1xRTT to EV-DO speeds in Los Angeles, Detroit, and Dallas. MetroPCS also plans to launch in four new markets with 3G from the get-go - New York, Las Vegas, Bostson, and Philadelphia will see MetroPCS’s 3G EVDO network go live in the near future. “Our customers want the most value for their dollar and our unlimited flat-rate service offers a compelling value proposition, which is evident by the remarkable continued growth of our subscriber base,” said Roger D. Linquist, MetroPCS’ Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. The upgraded 3G MetroPCS network will bring advanced data solutions to its subscriber-base. MetroPCS customers can expect the same “unlimited” rate plan model with even more service options - services like “advanced multimedia, mobile data, unified communications, video mail, speech-enabled and real-time voice portal applications.” MetroPCS did not outline their 3G-rollout timeline, but we assume it’ll be completed before the end of 2008. Unlimited wireless plans just got a bit more interesting. We’d love to see a 3G GSM network with an unlimited rate-plan model - now that would get us to bite. Samsung’s going after the Asian cash-cow that is the Indian wireless market by releasing the CDMA Samsung Max as an open-market mobile phone offering. Hyundai Kim, Vice President and Head of the CDMA Division at Samsung Telecommunications India Pvt. Ltd., said, “We expect to fuel the growth of the Indian CDMA industry through the launch Samsung Max in the open market. Fully feature loaded Samsung Max is launched to serve the Multimedia needs of the CDMA consumer. The availability of CDMA phones in the open market will provide Indian consumers freedom to choose network operator’s of their choice.” The Samsung Max will be bringing a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, R-UIM card support, expandable memory, FM radio, voice recorder, MP3 player, and a 1.9-inch display to Tata Indicom and Reliance Mobile subscribers. Customers will be able to choose either CDMA carrier as their wireless provider - such is the beauty of an open-market phone. Indians in Delhi and Mumbai can get their hands on the Samsung Max for Rs. 7,500, with several other large cities expected to get the handset by December 2007. Talk about a truly global-capable phone. The Motorola RIZR Z6c has just gotten the green-light from the FCC , and should be bringing all that GSM and CDMA goodness to Verizon’s network sometime soon. GSM and CDMA on Verizon’s network? Did Verizon launch some sort of undercover GSM network while we weren’t looking? Not a chance. Verizon’s more than happy with their CDMA stance in the US wireless landscape, but with most of the world using GSM technology, it makes sense for Verizon to bring a world phone on board with the ability to surf those GSM airwaves abroad. The Motorola RIZR Z6c slider (as the name would suggest) will be rocking the same 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, microSD card slot, and QVGA display from its MediaFLO and VCAST TV sporting sibling - the Motorola RIZR Z6tv . Verizon will be adding the Moto RIZR Z6c to its “World Edition” stable (alongside the recently released BlackBerry 8830 ) - the dual-band CDMA radio with EVDO and dual-band 900/1800 MHz GSM radio ensures that the Motorola RIZR Z6c “World Edition” will be comfortable in pretty much any country on this planet. We’re not sure when this thing’s going to go live on Verizon’s network. But, with the holiday season rapidly coming to a close, this FCC approval might expedite the Motorola RIZR Z6c’s launch. It looks like Alltel’s keeping up with its larger wireless rivals. The recently launched CDMA BlackBerry 8130 Pearl with that glorious integrated GPS receiver will be making its way to Alltel’s network sporting an “amethyst” color scheme. Expect the Alltel BlackBerry 8130 Pearl to pack in all the same hardware as its Sprint and Verizon kin - which is to say that it’ll rock GPS, EVDO, 2 megapixel camera, microSDHC card slot, and that SureType keyboard. Alltel says they’ll be launching their BlackBerry 8130 Pearl in time for the holiday shopping season (which is quite literally upon us), so look for this new Pearl to drop fairly soon. Oh, and it’ll cost you $150 after a $100 rebate (2-year contract required, of course).
