By now its a well known fact that iPhones are finding their way onto networks worldwide. Of course, that means that the unlocking market for the iPhone is booming - so much so that Apple has restricted sales of iPhones to US customers. Well, it looks like Apples finally taken it to the next level by going after the Singaporean retailers that are hocking these unlocked iPhones. Specifically, Apple has threatened to take legal action against retailers in Singapore’s Square (a mall in Singapore) - and could seek damages of S$1,000 (~US$691) per unlocked iPhone that’s sold. With Apple rumored to be having trouble convincing Chinese carriers that giving ridiculous revenue-kickbacks is a good idea, it makes sense for Apple to tighten its grip on the unlocked iPhone market. After all, why would China Mobile agree to a revenue sharing model if Apple can’t even assure them that the iPhone will be a China Mobile exclusive. Following on the recent announcement from RIM that China’s government gave the green-light to bring the outdated BlackBerry 8700 to the Chinese masses, China Mobile has announced that they will be launching the BlackBerry 8700 by month’s end. TCL Communications, the Chinese manufacturer of RIM’s BlackBerry 8700 said that they’ve gotten an order for 10,000 BlackBerry 8700 handsets from China Mobile, which will be sold under the “Alcatel BlackBerry 8700″ branding. TCL owns the Alcatel brand and helped RIM push certification of the BlackBerry 8700 through the Chinese beauracracy. The Alcatel BlackBerry 8700 will presumably be used with China Mobile’s existing BlackBerry wireless plans (available for BlackBerry handsets from abroad). There are two plans offered by China Mobile - one costs RMB 398 ($53.8) per month and the other will run RMB 598 ($80.8) per month. We’re sure Chinese businessmen will be happy to hear that they can now get an official BlackBerry 8700 from China Mobile. You know, instead of the more advanced BlackBerry handsets that could just as easily be brought in from, say, the US. As far as we know, Chinese 3G network is just around the corner eagerly waiting to be tested during the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing next August. The largest carrier in the country, China Mobile, expects to finish building 3G networks in eight cities by the end of this year and at least 10 more by the time of Olympics. As part of the its network rollout, China Mobile is testing multiple devices with one of them apparently running Windows Mobile 6. That’s certainly a good news for frequent business travelers to China, who at least from the start won’t be able to use their existing 3G smartphone in the “world’s fastest growing economy.” With the release of the first Windows Mobile devices in the country, they will be able to do their syncing via Chinese 3G network. Apparently, the upcoming device supports both TD-SCDMA and GSM/GPRS networks, and boasts such things as 2.4″ touchscreen, 3 MP camera and microSD memory slot. The manufacturer is still unknown, but there are some clues pointing to Taiwan’s Inventec Appliances (IAC) and Zhejiang Holley Communications (Holley Comm).
