Video recording on the iPhone gets real

Or at least as real as a proof-of-concept application can get. The iPhone’s lack of video recording was an interesting omission that didn’t really make sense. Battery issues shouldn’t be, well, an issue. There’s really no extra hardware involved. And every other decent cameraphone has video recording capability. So, it’s up to the third-party iPhone developers to bring some fancy video-magic to the table. The coders over at Monsters and Friends have cranked out an early-stage application that allows a bit of video recording functionality on the iPhone. So far, the application endows the iPhone with 10 seconds of 10fps video recording at 2 megapixel resolution. Apparently, max fps rates are capped around 40-45 frames-per-second. A handful of seconds of measly 10fps video really isn’t that impressive, but that’s not what we’re thinking about here. The real news is that development is ongoing and the ready-for-launch version of the application should bring unlimited video recording (at 15-30+fps) to the iPhone. Next step - get a minute of 30 fps video at a lower resolution. Yea, thanks Apple. Way to leave the essentials to the iPhone hackers while you keep yourself busy with not getting us that new v1.1.3 firmware . And, props to Monsters and Friends . Nokia: In the year 3000…we will have HD Video on our mobile phones

Actually, it might be a little sooner than the year 3000. Nokia envisions a future (hopefully a short-term future) where our mobile phones will be able record video in full HD-quality. It’s going to be a few years, but we should be sufficiently distracted with higher-megapixel cameras and ever faster data connection in the meantime - dare I mention ever more innovative UI’s? “It’s coming. Technically, we are a couple of years away,” Nokia’s Chief Technology Officer Tero Ojanpera told Reuters in an interview. “It’s still a few years away.” And, with Nokia’s ability to crank out high-tech handsets out of Espoo like none-other, there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing some sort of HD recording through Carl Zeiss optics. If not Nokia, then another manufacturer is bound to eventually bring HD-quality video recording to market. We may soon be using HDTV-lingo while shopping for our mobile phones. What’s that? You want a phone with an 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, broadband-killing wireless data, GPS, and a 720p HD video camera? No problem, just grab your checkbook. Those lucky French. The iPhone landed on French soil merely a week ago and it seems that Apple is already prepping an iPhone firmware update. The new v1.1.3 firmware is rumored to be getting the final touches to launch on Saturday, December 8 - and we’re expecting an Apple-sanctioned voice-recording application and a disk-mode function. Thanks for the great “Vnotes” app, Erica Sadun. We’ve been using your application to great effect over the past few months, but if Apple brings their own voice recording app to the iPhone, we’re going to have to jump ship and use the official Apple app. Oh, and disk-mode? Be still our geeky hearts! Here’s the translated text from Cnet France : “According to various rumors, it’s next Saturday that should leave the new firmware of the iPhone. This version 1.1.3 provides two major innovations: dictaphone function and the ability to use the telephone as an Apple hard drive. Indeed, the version 1.1.3 of the firmware, due at the end of the week, will mark a turning point since the iPhone will dictaphone and can be used as an external hard drive. ITunes requires, it will be impossible to directly transfer music and videos as with any other player. However, we can transfer documents more easily and content of the telephone network will be accessible. “ We’ve got high hopes for this rumor. After all, the new features aren’t exactly groundbreaking, and they’re completely in line with features that we’ve expected from the beginning. Give it a few days, we’ll have our answer soon enough. iPhone video recording, more features coming soon?

As long as the iPhone hacking community keeps jailbreaking the latest iPhone firmware updates , we have no problem with updating our handsets. However, should there come a time when iPhone hackers are unable to find a way into the iPhone’s file-system, Apple had better offer us some really, really, enticing features to get us to update our iPhones - features like video recording, iChat, MMS, stereo Bluetooth. Well, we could be getting those sought after features in the near future. Pocket-lint is reporting that they have confirmation from an Apple spokesperson that “plenty more upgrades” are planned for the future. “All the complaints and feature requests we’ve had can be fixed and added by software upgrades,” said the Apple spokesperson. There is even talk of Apple adding video recording functionality and integrating a YouTube uploading feature. And industry insider told Pocket-lint that, “They [Apple] aren’t stupid. They won’t want to give you everything at once. You wait, there will an exciting partnership with YouTube that adds video functionality and then lets you upload to the site in no time.” So, only time will tell if Apple will be releasing highly-sought-after features like video recording, iChat, and MMS. We really want some added Bluetooth support in the next update. But, as far as video uploading to YouTube, that’s highly unlikely. Downloading YouTube videos are painful enough over AT&T’s EDGE network, but uploading would be just excruciating. Hey Apple, Bluetooth keyboards! You have a great wireless keyboard that we’d love to use with our iPhones.
