FCC documents hint at Palm Treo 800w?
800 | 800w | centro | devices | documents | fcc | foleo | palm | rumors | treo | wifiSome people have too much time on their hands - and that’s a good thing. An intrepid FCC document-surfer over at Treo Central has uncovered email back-and-forths between the FCC and Palm. The documents seem to hint at a GSM variant of the Palm Centro (codenamed Gryphon/Gandalf) headed to AT&T as the Palm Centro 685 (Sprint’s Palm Centro goes by the model number “690″). A Palm Centro intended for a GSM network makes sense, and we’re not at all surprised to hear that AT&T might be getting their very own Centro next year. There’s also mention of a Palm “Otto” - which is likely the Asus-sourced Palm Treo 500w that may be headed to AT&T. What does surprise us, however, is the mention of an unknown device - codenamed “Zeppelin” and sporting “co-located WiFi and radio.” Whispers on the internets are pointing towards the Zeppelin being the rumored Palm Treo 800w . The mention of WiFi and radio could mean that the WiFi circuitry is shared with the Bluetooth radio or a cellular radio. If the Zeppelin includes a cellular radio, we could have documentation confirming a Palm Treo 800w. If the mention of “radio” refers to a Bluetooth jobby, we could have some expired documentation referring to the dead-like-mullets Palm Foleo - of course, Bluetooth could also indicate a mobile phone as well. Do we, or don’t we have a Palm Treo 800w on our hands? Only time will tell. We love FCC documents, but we love uncovering unintended-for-public communications between manufacturers and the FCC. We’ll keep an eye out for more details on the Palm Treo 800w, stay tuned. Verizon goes live with Palm Treo 755p; charges arm and leg
755p | announcements | devices | launches | live | palm | palm os | stupid | treo | verizonFaithful Verizon subscribers, rejoice! Following on recent certification test-approvals , the long-awaited Palm Treo 755p has finally hit the nation’s largest CDMA network (and No. 2 carrier) in full Verizon-guise. With a fresh new branding scheme and that oh-so-coveted (you should be detecting a hint of sarcasm at this point) Verizon logo emblazoned on the face, the Palm Treo 755p is now being offered for about $150 more than what Sprint customers pay. At $400, the $50 rebate doesn’t do much for the Palm Treo 755p’s price point, but a good data plan should bring down the price-tag to about $300. To bring you up to date on this whole Palm/Verizon mess. The Palm Treo 755p on Verizon’s network is the unnamed device that Palm blamed for their 2007 shortfalls. And, with the Treo 755p hitting the CDMA network at an outrageous price point and much later than expected , Verizon customers must be feeling somewhat burned by Big Red. Especially considering that the Verizon-branded Palm Treo 755p offers absolutely nothing over any other Treo 755p on the market. Excuse us while we shake our heads in disappointment. 755p | devices | lay | layoff | off | palm | palm os | rumors | treo | verizonWell, ain’t this a bit of unexpected good news from the ailing Treo-maker. It seems that recent layoff plans and negative quarterly results haven’t stopped Palm from continuing to push the Palm Treo 755p through Verizon Wireless’s certification tests . We’re hearing that the hugely disappointing Treo 755p has been given the thumbs-up to hit Big Red’s network and should be pulling duty as Verizon’s Treo-flagship in the near future - that is, if you still (or ever did) care. It’s too bad the delay of this incredibly unworthy device was the cause of Palm’s continued financial troubles - and precipitated the demise of a portion of Palm’s workforce. Verizon Wireless fans rejoice! Your carrier’s certification process is the root of all those employees’ holiday woes. Hope it was worth it . Was it worth it? Damn. Verizon blaming delayed Palm Treo 755p for negative Q4 2007 forecast?
755p | delay | palm | palm os | rumors | treo | verizonPalm’s shares recently took a bit of a nose-dive on news that an unnamed handset’s delay, coupled with unexpected warranty repairs, will lead to a negative Q4 2007 for the No. 2 national, and largest CDMA, carrier. So, just what mobile phone did Verizon Wireless have in its pipeline and failed to launch? Well, word on the street has it that Verizon’s Palm Treo 755p is to blame. We’re hearing that Verizon has had trouble getting the Palm Treo 755p certified for its CDMA network. And, following on rumors that the Treo 755p was headed to Verizon , it looks like the unrivaled boring-ness of Palm’s high-end (with that incredibly craptastic Palm OS) will be delayed a bit longer. Unfortunate? Yes. Disappointing? Absolutely…not. Hey Palm, get your act together and concentrate on compelling and unique devices. Otherwise, your new equity partner may never see a return on their sizable investment. Palm stock dives on news of Q4 2007 shortfalls
announcements | financial | loss | marketshare | palm | palm os | stock | treoThe ailing manufacturer of the Palm Treo lineup has taken yet another hit to its market-stance. After having pulled development of the Flop-eo (sorry, that’s Foleo), Palm seems to be navigating rougher waters. Palm’s shares took a dive today after an announcement that a shipping delay, coupled with “unforeseen” warranty repairs, would cause Palm to see a Q4 2007 loss. Palm has already seen a 35% loss since closing their deal with Elevation Partners , and has just dropped another 18% to trade at $5.41 in early-hours trading. Stiff competition from RIM and Apple were cited to be largely contributing to the company’s loss of market share, and by extension, losses on the stock market. The Palm Treo has seen a declining market share while RIM’s BlackBerry lineup has been booming - and Apple’s iPhone has presented another major detractor to Palm’s marketshare. Hopefully the new OS will help boost Palm’s lagging position on the smartphone front. If it ever arrives, that is. Palm might do well to consider selling another bunk-stake in the company in exchange for another cash-infusion? It wouldn’t be a good deal for the investor, but Palm needs the money. Any charity investors out there? That’s right, following on Palm’s hours-old launch of the Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade for AT&T-branded Treo 750 users, the struggling handset manufacturer has announced that they’ll be selling the unlocked Palm Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6.0 pre-installed for $549. Previously only available through AT&T, the unlocked Palm Treo 750 is basically the same handset that you will be getting from AT&T, sans the carrier’s logo and any AT&T-specific firmware tweaks. And, as a world phone, the Palm Treo 750 will be able to get its 3G-on in the US and Europe. So, if you’ve got the need, or are willing, to trade worldwide 3G productivity for some bulk and oddly-sized display, head on over to your Palm Store (we’ve only seen one retail store, ever) or hit the online store for your own unlocked Palm Treo 750.
