Quanta licenses Intrinsync Soleus to build WindowsCE device for…someone
developer | devices | intrinsync | quanta | soleus | wince | windows | windowsceThe who’s, where’s, and how’s of this equation are still a bit murky. But, we can tell you that Quanta has bought up some Intrinsync Soleus platform-licenses with the intention of building a WindowsCE-based device for, well, someone. The WinCE device will purportedly sport HSDPA functionality and should hit the market (whatever market that turns out to be) in 2H of 2008. There’s no specific mention of phone-functionality, so this HSDPA-packing device could be a low-end computer, or a high-end WindowsCE smartphone (the Soleus platform support quad-band GSM). It would be nice to know just what market and for what vendor this handset is intended, but that would be asking too much. We’ll keep our eyes peeled and our ears to the wind for more details on this Quanta-sourced new WinCE handset computer device. In your face Steve Ballmer - Apple iPhone Q3 2007 market-share busts up Windows Mobile
announcements | apple | iphone | market | mobile | research | share | windowsWe love quoting CEO’s. They’re good at shooting off at the mouth and having to later eat those words. Take, for example, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s statement about the iPhone back in April. Mr. Balls-mer said that “ There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.” Well, guess what? The Apple iPhone took out the entirety of all Windows Mobile devices’ market share in Q3 2007. With iPhone market-share continuing to grow, Steve Ballmer is likely eating those bitter words. But, we’re sure he doesn’t mind it all that much - those tens of millions of dollars in yearly dessert-salary are a good way to wash that bitter taste off of any palette. NPD is reporting that the iPhone snatched up a remarkable 27% of the US smartphone market in Q3 2007. The findings are in line with recent reports that the mobile-web was dominated by surfers using the iPhone’s unrivaled Safari browser. Hey, Microsoft investors, you sure you still want to be feeding this guy all those fatty C-notes? He looks like he’s had more than his fair share. That’s right, following on Palm’s hours-old launch of the Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade for AT&T-branded Treo 750 users, the struggling handset manufacturer has announced that they’ll be selling the unlocked Palm Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6.0 pre-installed for $549. Previously only available through AT&T, the unlocked Palm Treo 750 is basically the same handset that you will be getting from AT&T, sans the carrier’s logo and any AT&T-specific firmware tweaks. And, as a world phone, the Palm Treo 750 will be able to get its 3G-on in the US and Europe. So, if you’ve got the need, or are willing, to trade worldwide 3G productivity for some bulk and oddly-sized display, head on over to your Palm Store (we’ve only seen one retail store, ever) or hit the online store for your own unlocked Palm Treo 750. More details, pics of Windows Mobile 6.1
6.0 | 6.1 | applications | mobile | sms | threaded | update | windows | windows mobile | winmo | wm6We finally have a face to put on the update to the Windows Mobile 6.0 OS , dubbed 6.1. That same Motorola Q9 that hinted at AT&T’s plan to bring WiFi to the Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard masses has revealed a couple delicious morsels of information on Windows Mobile 6.1. The WM6.1 homescreen (that you see above) doesn’t seem all that radically different from the WM6 interface, but that’s to be expected with an evolutionary “0.1″ upgrade. What is different is the revised homescreen that gives quick-panning access to recent activity (pictured is the “Missed Call” list) and the addition of threaded SMS text messages and cut-and-paste functionality on the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard OS. Which means that hacking your WinMo device to get threaded SMS text messages will be a thing of the past. Here’s the full run-down of additions that you can expect to see in the WinMo6.1 update (from BGR):
- Copy / Paste
- Domain Enroll in Settings (Enrolling in a domain will connect your device with company resources.)
- New home screen (pan left and right to check out missed calls, notifications like email, sms, etc.)
- Change Master Security Code
- Added text input settings
- Recent Programs when pressing Start menu
- Threaded SMS
- When you compose an email, or SMS, and start typing the name of the contact in the “To:” field, the contact names finally pop up like Windows Mobile Professional!
- Internet Explorer now lets you define a homepage, and also zoom in and out using a nice and clean interface
Windows Mobile update to add higher-resolution widescreen display support
6.0 | announcements | applications | developer | dynamic | high resolution | mobile | update | widescreen | windows | windows mobile | winmo | winmo6 | wm6Well, it’s about time. We’ve been stuck with our 320 x 240 WinMo resolutions for so long that it’s almost surprising that Microsoft has added higher-resolution widescreen support. We say almost because the bumped-up resolution support is pretty much the most logical and simplest feature update that Microsoft could have included in the new Windows Mobile 6.0 interface - so the update took us by surprise, but Windows Mobile 6.0 is overdue for this kind of update. Regardless, dynamic (resolution changes between landscape and portrait views) resolution outputs are going to support a host of display formats - from tiny displays with 240 x 240 resolutions to huge widescreens with DVD-like resolutions of 480 x 800. Accelerometers will be used to detect portrait or landscape orientation changes, prompting automatic resolution changes (dynamic) to match the screen’s orientation (much like the iPhone). And this is just about the simplest update that’s due for the new WinMo6 - we can’t wait to see what the rest of the updated Windows Mobile 6.0 will look like! JGUI brings the look of Windows Vista to your Windows Mobile smartphone
announcements | applications | jgui | mobile | smartphone | vista | windows | windows mobileIf you’re like us, you’re already tired of Windows Mobile 6.0’s interface. Sure, it was spiffy and exciting for a while, but our attention span (as far as our mobile phones are concerned) is brutally short. Suffice it to say that it doesn’t take all that long to become bored with the latest and greatest tech around these parts. It’s a good thing there’s the JGUI Vista Smartphone Interface for Windows Mobile Smartphones. The Vista look-alike interface basically replaces your Windows Mobile Smartphone’s homescreen with some Sidebar-enabled eye-candy. That’s right, you get Sidebar functionality with gadgets - and there’s a bit of Aero in the taskbar. JGUI Vista Smartphone Interface is designed for WinMo Smartphones (non-touchscreen) handsets with landscape-oriented displays - think, BlackJack and Motorola Q. There’s also a PocketPC version available for download, but we don’t have a WM PPC device with a landscape display to give it a run-through. Grab the download here . If you decide to give JGUI Vista Smartphone Interface a whirl on your WinMo PPC, drop us a line and let us know how you like it. Opera Mobile named 'Best Windows Mobile Browser'
announcements | applications | best | browser | mobile | opera | windowsIt’s official. Well, at least as far as Smartphone and PocketPC Magazine is concerned. Opera Mobile has been named the “best mobile browser for both Windows-based Pocket PC and Smartphones at the 2007 Best Software Awards by Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine.” We should note that the Opera Mobile browser was nominated to compete against its sister-browser, the Opera Mini browser, and the Thunderhawk browser in the Internet Browser and Web Utilities category. Opera Mobile took top honors in the competition over Opera Mini and Skweezer. “Fourteen independent Windows Mobile experts selected Opera Mobile as the winner in the all-important Internet Browser category in the 2007 Best Software Awards. Congratulations to the Opera Mobile team,” says Hal Goldstein, Executive Editor, Awards Administrator, Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine. The results highlighted Opera Mobile’s Flash support, page-rendering capabilities, tabbed browsing, and dual-viewing modes as helping secure Opera Mobile’s position as the “best” - and we tend to agree. As much as we love Opera Mini , and we do love it , Opera Mobile is the more powerful browser. If you’re handset can handle it, and you don’t mind paying for it, Opera Mobile is the way to go. Google announces new 'My Location' service for Google Maps Mobile - find yourself without GPS
announcements | applications | blackberry | google | gps | location | maps | mobile | my | s60 | services | symbian | technologies | windows | windows mobileMaps are great if you know exactly where you’re currently located, but what good are they when you’re completely lost? Navizon is a great solution to help locate your approximate position based on cell-tower signal triangulation (we’ve been using on our iPhones with great results for some time now), and now Google is treading all over their turf. With Google’s announcement of their new “My Location” service on compatible phones with Google Maps for Mobile marks the launch of a public test of the new faux-GPS position location feature. Google says they’ve compiled a database of cell-tower locations through previous Google Maps users, and has employed some “algorithms” (we call them “triangulation equations”) to quickly give Google Maps for Mobile users a fairly accurate lock of their current position. By simply pressing ‘0′ on your keypad, the service can pinpoint locations to within several meters in optimal condition - presumably with at least three cell-towers in range. The “My Location” service is available for free to anyone with Google Maps for Mobile and a compatible cellphone - its in open beta testing, but is available to most BlackBerry, S60, and Windows Mobile users. Users with integrated GPS receivers can use the new “My Location” service for Google Maps Mobile to complement their satellite position-fix when buildings or mountains obscure the line-of-sight required for a GPS signal-lock. Head on over to Google’s download page to find out if your phone is compatible with the upgrade. Windows Mobile - it's a man's world
male | men | mobile | research | study | windows | windows mobile | winmo | wmNot to come off too chauvinistic, but it would appear that it’s a man’s world afterall - at least as far as Windows Mobile is concerned. A study conducted by Microsoft found that only 14.6% of the Windows Mobile users are women, 85.4% of users being of the male persuasion. Could it be Microsoft’s (Windows Mobile’s) penchant for designing their user interface with a priority on function? Windows Mobile devices tend to be more logically and straight-forwardly designed then their fashion-oriented brethren, could it have something to do with the “eye-candy” factor? Now, before you go off on a tirade about how men and women are created equal, women are just as logical as men, have use for straight-forward designs, and all that jazz, just know that we’re all for women being considered on the same playing field as men. But, the fact remains that women prefer “prettier” colors, sleeker designs, and more attractive user interfaces - is it any wonder that Windows Mobile devices are more appealing to men, while fashion-phones like the Pink Baby Phat RAZR and SLVR are geared towards the female side? Windows Mobile had better start thinking more about design and the “eye-candy” factor if it hope to attract more women into using the WinMo platform. Afterall, 50.4% of all handsets belong to women.
