Sprint LG Rumor gets firmware fix

Sprint sure got that new firmware out fast. Following on the firmware problems that left the door open to let the common user access an engineering menu and wiping their handset clean of any firmware bits, Sprint and LG have already released the fixed-up firmware for LG Rumor users to download post-haste. The new firmware is available to Sprint’s LG Rumor owners and is an OTA (over-the-air) download, so updating your LG Rumor is as easy as a couple button-presses. Sprint halts sales of LG Rumor amid firmware-wiping fears

Talk about getting off on the wrong foot. The Sprint Rumor , made by LG, has seen launch-delays and stock shortages since before it was even available to Joe-cellphone-shopper. Now, it seems that Sprint has hit another wall with the LG Rumor - leading the struggling carrier to halt sales of the uber-popular handset until the problem is fixed. The Sprint LG Rumor was apparently shipped with a less-than-finalized version of the firmware. Engineers use a special debug command that is built into the firmware’s boot-up process. Unfortunately, this debug mode was left intact and accessible by Joe-cellphone-shopper with a combination of key-presses during the startup process. Even more unfortunate is the fact that this debug mode causes the firmware to self-destruct and wipe itself clean from the phone’s onboard memory - requiring nothing short of a trip to the factory for repairs/reflashing. Sprint has stopped selling the LG Rumor until the problem can be fixed and applied to its stock of Sprint LG Rumor handsets. Current LG Rumor owners can expect an OTA (Over-The-Air) fix once Sprint and LG have plugged the hole in the current firmware. Sprint had better get and stay on top of this issue right quick. The LG Rumor has the potential to boost Sprint’s subscriber numbers, but only if they can keep the handset stocked and problem-free. Just don’t go pressing random keys while your Sprint LG Rumor is booting up, ‘kay? We love us some juicy 3G iPhone rumors . As with most things Apple, there’s nothing from Cupertino that would indicate that this latest report from CNBC’s Jim Goldman has any more credibility than any other “report” that cites “inside sources.” But, Goldman believes that the 3G iPhone will hit the US market in late May, early June 2008. This latest rumor is in line with AT&T CEO Stephenson’s confirmation of a 2008-release for the next-generation iPhone , as well as other rumors that the 3G iPhone has been delayed from an early 2008 (Q1) release to a mid-2008/Summer launch window . It makes sense for Apple to hold off on the next-gen 3G iPhone until at least a year after the iPhone’s initial launch in the US market. Hopefully by the time the 3G iPhone launches, AT&T’s 3G network will have the ubiquity that Europeans enjoy so much. Those lucky French. The iPhone landed on French soil merely a week ago and it seems that Apple is already prepping an iPhone firmware update. The new v1.1.3 firmware is rumored to be getting the final touches to launch on Saturday, December 8 - and we’re expecting an Apple-sanctioned voice-recording application and a disk-mode function. We’ve been using your application to great effect over the past few months, but if Apple brings their own voice recording app to the iPhone, we’re going to have to jump ship and use the official Apple app. Oh, and disk-mode? Be still our geeky hearts! Here’s the translated text from Cnet France : “According to various rumors, it’s next Saturday that should leave the new firmware of the iPhone. iPhone hacker reveals Apple's online (iTunes) rental plans

The latest iPhone update didn’t really do anything impressive for our iPhones. Sure, that TIFF-image security hole was patched, but it was more of a headache for third-party iPhone developers than anything else. Or was it? One iPhone hacker noticed that the last iPhone update contained some interesting code hidden within. These code strings seem to indicate (and confirm previous rumors) that Apple is cooking up some sort of online-based (most likely iTunes-based) rental scheme.
