NTT makes moves to get 2G switched off - eventually

NTT DoCoMo has announced that it will stop accepting customer applications for it’s 2G “Mova” service from 30/11. It has also announced that it is waiving charges for those porting to it’s 3G “FOMA” service. NTT has said it is eventually looking to shut down the Mova service, and concentrate on FOMA (and I would assume [...]

NTT DoCoMo profits up 41%!

Well it’s not all bad news in the financial stakes for companies in the Mobile Industry. Following Sharp’s bad news, and O2’s mixed news, comes pretty good news for NTT DoCoMo - their profits are up 41.3% in the quarter just ended! DoCoMo is attributing this rise to both strong sales of handsets, and an increase [...]

Japanese handset sales drop 20%, Japanese tuning out on advanced features

Japan has long been known as the land where advanced mobile phones pack features that would have the average American dizzy with wonderment. Japanese handset makers have been concentrating on stuffing as much techno-gadgetry in to their dumb-phones in an attempt to woo as many Japanese tech-heads as possible. But, there’s a problem. Japan has seen [...]

LTE is really starting to stretch its legs as the high-speed mobile broadband standard that we knew it could always be.

If you're like me, you're always eagerly waiting for the new product announcements coming from the leading Japanese mobile operators. They have the best phones in the world and it's unfortunate that we don't see many of those devices hitting markets outside of Japan. However, the advanced functionalities of Japanese phones are also an obstacle to [...]

You mean companies can sue for copyright infringement on the design of a particular handset? That must have been news to Toshiba, seeing as how they blatantly copied a RakuRaku handset made by Fujitsu. You see, the Toshiba Kandan Keitai 821T is an almost carbon-copy of the Fujitsu Foma RakuRaku Phone III, prompting NTT DoCoMo [...]

Wow, the Japanese handset market is really proving to be a tough nut to crack (a profit from, that is). With Sanyo's recent exit from the mobile phone business, and Mitsubishi's withdrawal from the handset game, it's clear that even Japan's larger handset makers are done with the grind that is the mobile phone industry.
Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo confirmed to be negotiating with Apple for iPhone

We previously reported that the largest wireless operator in Japan has been in talks with Apple to bring the coveted iPhone to the island-nation’s NTT DoCoMo network. Well, today we get confirmation straight from NTT DoCoMo that Apple is indeed working with the Japanese network to bring those edgy-Japs a bit of minimalist-style. “It is true that Mr. Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. and our president (Masao) Nakamura held a meeting,” an NTT DoCoMo spokesman said in a statement to the Agence France-Presse ,. Unfortunately, NTT DoCoMo wasn’t all that forthcoming with information regarding the timing of the iPhone’s Japanese debut or even what Apple and NTT DoCoMo were talking about. Now, we are also hearing that Apple is in talks with another Japanese network operator, presumably to hedge their bets and make sure the iPhone makes it to Japan one way or another. Softbank Corp., Japans No. 3 carrier, has been rumored to have made business trips to Cupertino to discuss the iPhone exclusivity deals. Apple could be working both sides of the Japanese market to make sure they can land the revenue-sharing deal that’s turned the whole manufacturer-carrier model on its head. We’re not going to expect a Japanese iPhone launch before the middle of next year, perhaps in line with the Asian launch that we’re looking for in China. Ears to the ground, folks. Ears to the ground.
