FreeCaddie turns your Windows Mobile GPS phone into a gold range-finder

You don't have to be a good golfer to appreciate any little advantage that technology can give you on the greens. I don't think there's a single hole that I've ever swung a club a that didn't result in a double bogey, but that's besides the point. One thing that might make it a little easier [...]

As cool as the prospect of a completely "connected life" is, the real gem in this video is a brief glimpse of the next-generation Windows Mobile. Fast forward to about 00:32 (32 seconds) to get a sneak peak at the next major revamping [...]

Microsoft makes Windows Live available for Windows Mobile

Microsoft loves to confuse the hell out of mobile enthusiasts with their multitude of mobile services. If it isn't Windows Live, it's Live Search, or it could be non-application Live Search web search. Windows Live is the brand name under which Microsoft is developing its web services and application. A unified "Live" web service platform [...]

Bet you didn't realize that your crash-prone Windows Mobile smartphone is secure enough to handle government and military duty, did you? Well, actually, the Windows Mobile platform is quite stable and secure - the main reason that WinMo gets such a bad rap from a stability standpoint is because of all those third-party applications that [...]

RoverPC P6 - the Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphone from Russia, with love

We don’t see many handsets coming out with native price-tags in Rubles, but here’s a little gem from RoverPC. The Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional-powered RoverPC P6 is fairly slim (15.1 mm, to be exact), pretty slick, and definitely likable. It’s not the greatest WinMo offering, but it ain’t that bad, either. As the Professional moniker suggests, the RoverPC P6 rocks a 2.4-inch touchscreen. This little guy only sports a tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900Mhz) radio, which will keep it from hitting the US-mainstream. But, if you like the sound of a 2 megapixel camera (with video recording), Bluetooth 1.2, miniUSB, microSD card slot, 128MB ROM/64MB RAM, and Windows Mobile 6.0 - all powered by a Samsung 2442B CPU clocked at 300Mhz - then grab the RoverPC P6 for 7990 Rubles ($323) at your nearest Russian mobile retailer.
Vodafone nixes Windows Mobile 920 handset

Not that we were all that excited for Vodafone to launch their Windows Mobile slider from HTC ( HTC Kii ?), but we thought a few of you out there might want to know that the Vodafone 920 has been pulled from Vodafone’s lineup. Vodafone gave no reason for killing the Vodafone 920, but we’re figuring it might have something to do with certification tests or maybe some conflicting product offerings. Whatever the reason, we hope you weren’t planning on grabbing a Vodafone 920 for yourself, you’ll just have to make do with another HTC-based Windows Mobile device. Take a look at the T-Mobile Shadow, it’s fairly similar to the Vodafone 920 - all may not be lost (of course, the two are offered in different markets, so we’ll leave the importing up tot you). Come to think of it, Vodafone may have done you a favor, with all those incredible WinMo offerings (especially from HTC) on the market, you’d do better with less choices.
Palm announces unlocked Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6.0 for the contract-wary

If contracts and carrier-branding just aren’t your cup of tea, Palm’s got the perfect Treo 750 for you - an unlocked, un-branded version. That’s right, following on Palm’s hours-old launch of the Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade for AT&T-branded Treo 750 users, the struggling handset manufacturer has announced that they’ll be selling the unlocked Palm Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6.0 pre-installed for $549. Previously only available through AT&T, the unlocked Palm Treo 750 is basically the same handset that you will be getting from AT&T, sans the carrier’s logo and any AT&T-specific firmware tweaks. And, as a world phone, the Palm Treo 750 will be able to get its 3G-on in the US and Europe. So, if you’ve got the need, or are willing, to trade worldwide 3G productivity for some bulk and oddly-sized display, head on over to your Palm Store (we’ve only seen one retail store, ever) or hit the online store for your own unlocked Palm Treo 750.
More details, pics of Windows Mobile 6.1

We finally have a face to put on the update to the Windows Mobile 6.0 OS , dubbed 6.1. That same Motorola Q9 that hinted at AT&T’s plan to bring WiFi to the Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard masses has revealed a couple delicious morsels of information on Windows Mobile 6.1. The WM6.1 homescreen (that you see above) doesn’t seem all that radically different from the WM6 interface, but that’s to be expected with an evolutionary “0.1″ upgrade. What is different is the revised homescreen that gives quick-panning access to recent activity (pictured is the “Missed Call” list) and the addition of threaded SMS text messages and cut-and-paste functionality on the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard OS. Which means that hacking your WinMo device to get threaded SMS text messages will be a thing of the past. Here’s the full run-down of additions that you can expect to see in the WinMo6.1 update (from BGR):

Copy / Paste

Domain Enroll in Settings (Enrolling in a domain will connect your device with company resources.)

New home screen (pan left and right to check out missed calls, notifications like email, sms, etc.)

Change Master Security Code

Added text input settings

Recent Programs when pressing Start menu

Threaded SMS

When you compose an email, or SMS, and start typing the name of the contact in the “To:” field, the contact names finally pop up like Windows Mobile Professional!

Internet Explorer now lets you define a homepage, and also zoom in and out using a nice and clean interface

Of course, carriers and manufacturers will have the final say on whether or not your particular Windows Mobile 6.0 device will be getting the 6.1 update. So, we can only hope that most of them see fit to bring the update to their smartphone fleet. The new look of the UI is a real refreshing update to the aging WinMo platform, and we can’t wait to start using it on our WM devices. Bring on the WM6.1 update! Keep reading for more screen-shots of the Windows Mobile 6.1 update. Want more pics? Head on over to BGR’s gallery .
Windows Mobile update to add higher-resolution widescreen display support

Well, it’s about time. We’ve been stuck with our 320 x 240 WinMo resolutions for so long that it’s almost surprising that Microsoft has added higher-resolution widescreen support. We say almost because the bumped-up resolution support is pretty much the most logical and simplest feature update that Microsoft could have included in the new Windows Mobile 6.0 interface - so the update took us by surprise, but Windows Mobile 6.0 is overdue for this kind of update. Regardless, dynamic (resolution changes between landscape and portrait views) resolution outputs are going to support a host of display formats - from tiny displays with 240 x 240 resolutions to huge widescreens with DVD-like resolutions of 480 x 800. Accelerometers will be used to detect portrait or landscape orientation changes, prompting automatic resolution changes (dynamic) to match the screen’s orientation (much like the iPhone). And this is just about the simplest update that’s due for the new WinMo6 - we can’t wait to see what the rest of the updated Windows Mobile 6.0 will look like!
Windows Mobile - it's a man's world

Not to come off too chauvinistic, but it would appear that it’s a man’s world afterall - at least as far as Windows Mobile is concerned. A study conducted by Microsoft found that only 14.6% of the Windows Mobile users are women, 85.4% of users being of the male persuasion. Could it be Microsoft’s (Windows Mobile’s) penchant for designing their user interface with a priority on function? Windows Mobile devices tend to be more logically and straight-forwardly designed then their fashion-oriented brethren, could it have something to do with the “eye-candy” factor? Now, before you go off on a tirade about how men and women are created equal, women are just as logical as men, have use for straight-forward designs, and all that jazz, just know that we’re all for women being considered on the same playing field as men. But, the fact remains that women prefer “prettier” colors, sleeker designs, and more attractive user interfaces - is it any wonder that Windows Mobile devices are more appealing to men, while fashion-phones like the Pink Baby Phat RAZR and SLVR are geared towards the female side? Windows Mobile had better start thinking more about design and the “eye-candy” factor if it hope to attract more women into using the WinMo platform. Afterall, 50.4% of all handsets belong to women.
Sprint and HTC to give Sprint Mogul owners a late Christmas present - GPS and EV-DO Rev. A

Have any of you Sprint Mogul owners out there wished for GPS and EVDO Rev. A in your HTC-sourced handset? You know, the features that your Sprint Mogul handset already has built into it, but were disabled for some crazy reason? Well, it looks like Sprint and HTC are working on a new ROM update that will enable the GPS and EVDO Rev. A hardware that’s been waiting patiently inside your Sprint Mogul, hoping to one day see some action. That recent ROM update that HTC released for the Sprint Mogul had apparently caused more problems than it fixed. Actually, Sprint’s recommending that anyone experiencing ROM-update troubles should downgrade to the previous ROM version - not exactly an elegant solution, but it should hold you over until a fix is issued by month’s end. And, to make it up to Sprint Mogul owners, Sprint has promised to break the GPS and EVDO Rev. A radios out of their shells and give them a chance to stretch their legs. Actually, it’s HTC that’s cooking up the GPS and Rev. A-enabling WinMo6 ROM, but who cares where it’s coming from as long as it gets here (or there, whatever). Look for the new WinMo ROM from HTC in early Q1 2008 - just in time to be late for Christmas. Here’s the verbiage from Sprint: Additionally, HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008. We would also like to extend our thanks to those customers that have taken the time to identify and report these issues to us. We’re not to broken up over the Sprint Mogul’s lack of GPS and EVDO Rev. A (our AT&T Tilt keeps us plenty happy), but we’re sure all you Sprint Mogul owners out there are jumping for joy right about…now. Go ahead, jump away, no one can see you. Stay tuned, we’ll let you know the second that new ROM is made available.
AT&T to update Palm Treo 750 to Windows Mobile 6.0 soon?

Well, AT&T’s missed it before , and they’ve missed it again. But, could AT&T be on track to release the incredibly sought-after and highly-anticipated Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional upgrade this week (or soon, at least)? The update was rumored for a release earlier this week, but apparently went back into hiding when AT&T noticed bugs in the update. If the bugs were anything less than system-critical, we’d imagine that AT&T could make the necessary fixes and finally get that update out to eager AT&T-branded Treo 750 owner. We know, we know. The pain must be unbearable at this point. Why not just go and grab that leaked WM6 ROM and rub it in AT&T’s face? Or, on second thought, it’s probably best not to tell AT&T about your ill-gotten Palm Treo 750 WinMo6 ROM.
