Helio lowers price on unlimited rate plans

Is this a sign of things to come? Following on luxury MVNO Voce’s abrupt (and unethical) bankruptcy , Helio has just lowered the price of their unlimited rate plans. The Helio unlimited plan offers unlimited voice minutes, data, and SMS text messages for a new, low price of $99. The price has been slashed from the previous $145 price point, and the new price seems to be a limited affair. The new $99 Helio unlimited plan doesn’t allow device-tethering, but hey, it’s still a good deal for heavy-talkers/data-consumers. Now, what does this price-cut mean for Helio? One way to look at it is that Helio is just trying to expand its customer-base by playing around with rate-plan prices. On the other hand, Helio may be hurting for more customers. When carriers find themselves short on subscribers (and cash), they generally slash prices - which is exactly what Voce kept doing before their network went dark a couple days ago. After all, Helio has to make sure it puts that fresh $70 cash infusion to good use. Remember that easy-to-use, messaging phone that Samsung was sending over to MetroPCS’s network? Yea, well, it’s finally gone live in time for some last-minute holiday shopping. The Samsung R410 will bring some QWERTY-based messaging prowess to MetroPCS’s mid-range lineup. At a $200 price point, this thing is actually at the higher-end of the carrier’s stable, but with features like a VGA camera (they call it a “high-resolution” shooter, but we know better) and Bluetooth as the most-advanced offering, the Samsung R410 isn’t all that high-end. Still, if unlimited calling plans and text-messaging focus is what you’re looking for, then the Samsung R410 on MetroPCS should do you just fine. Grab it for the aforementioned $200 in your choice of black or red. We like the red, but you can’t go wrong with black. Following on MetroPCS’s successful launch in the c oveted Los Angeles market , the “unlimited” carrier has announced that they’ll be working with Alcatel-Lucent to bring 3G data service to seven key markets in the US. MetroPCS won the 3G spectrum in last year’s AWS spectrum auction, and will be upgrading their CDMA network from 1xRTT to EV-DO speeds in Los Angeles, Detroit, and Dallas. MetroPCS also plans to launch in four new markets with 3G from the get-go - New York, Las Vegas, Bostson, and Philadelphia will see MetroPCS’s 3G EVDO network go live in the near future. “Our customers want the most value for their dollar and our unlimited flat-rate service offers a compelling value proposition, which is evident by the remarkable continued growth of our subscriber base,” said Roger D. Linquist, MetroPCS’ Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. The upgraded 3G MetroPCS network will bring advanced data solutions to its subscriber-base. MetroPCS customers can expect the same “unlimited” rate plan model with even more service options - services like “advanced multimedia, mobile data, unified communications, video mail, speech-enabled and real-time voice portal applications.” MetroPCS did not outline their 3G-rollout timeline, but we assume it’ll be completed before the end of 2008. Unlimited wireless plans just got a bit more interesting. We’d love to see a 3G GSM network with an unlimited rate-plan model - now that would get us to bite. Free unlimited calling plans are MetroPCS’s forte, but they just don’t have any youth-oriented messaging phones. As such, MetroPCS has announced that they are picking up the horizontally-sliding Samsung R410 to boost their wireless stable. What’s with the horizontal slider, you ask? Why, it reveals a full QWERTY keyboard for the text-messaging set. Unfortunately, when $35 unlimited calling plans are involved, you’ll have to sacrifice a couple power-features. The MetroPCS Samsung R410 trades a multi-megapixel camera and EVDO data connection for a lowly VGA shooter and 1xRTT data speeds. On the up-side, there’s a bit of stereo Bluetooth goodness to keep you in Bluetooth-headphone-bliss as you lament the absence of a decent data connection. But hey, if unlimited wireless calling on a text-messaging ace like the Samsung R410 is everything you’ve been wishing for, then head on over to MetroPCS and grab your own Samsung R410 for somewhere between $150 and $200. Oh, and unlimited AIM chats, text messages, and internet access will bump up your unlimited calling plan to $50 a month. Actually, for the price and the intended demographic, we’re liking the Samsung R410 more and more. Unlimited data plans, and their carrier-defined usage limits, have been getting a lot of coverage recently . Wireless carriers love to use the term “fair-use” to define their policies regarding these supposed “unlimited data” plans. But, to whom, exactly, are these policies “fair?” Not the consumer, that’s for sure. O2, Apple’s partner carrier in the UK, took some flak for their “fair use” policy regarding the “unlimited data” plans for future iPhone customers. In this case, the UK carrier was expected to limit their iPhone customers to 200MB of “unlimited” data per month. But, according to the Telegraph , O2 has just rescinded their policy - allowing UK iPhone-hopefuls to surf the web and check email with abandon. Here’s the revised ToS from O2: “ There is no limit on the monthly network usage. However if we feel that your activities are so excessive that other customers are detrimentally affected, we may give you a written warning (by email or otherwise). In extreme circumstances, if the levels of activity do not immediately decrease after the warning, we may terminate or suspend your Services.” Come this Friday, November 9 at 6:02pm , Brits will be able to enjoy their very own O2 iPhone with “unlimited data” allowances - as long as they cross some invisible line. Wait, what’s with the “6:02″ release time? Oh, (insert feigned laughter here), O2 will launch the iPhone at 6:02. Um yea, we get it now. Hot on the heels of reparations payed to their unfairly terminated data-plan customers and the state of New York , Verizon Wireless has reworked their Terms of Service to specifically outline what they mean by “unlimited data.” By the sounds of it, Verizon’s “unlimited data” verbiage seems to indicate a 5GB monthly data allowance. In other words, your data-plan is “unlimited” until you hit the 5GB limit. Confused yet?You see, Verizon Wireless wants their customers to know that the “unlimited data” plans are intended for mobile use. That means they don’t want you to replace their landline-based broadband solutions with the wireless-flavored EVDO solution - streaming of video/audio and P2P file sharing are out of the question. And, should you exceed the 5GB/month limit on your “unlimited” plan, Verizon will “reduce throughput speeds of any application that would otherwise exceed such speed to a maximum of approximately 200Kbps” - with actual speeds “subject to change.”As long as you aren’t using your mobile phone’s unlimited data plan to stream video or share movies, you should be well within Verizon’s new definition of “unlimited.” But still, be wary of your wireless data consumption. Verizon Wireless is gearing up for the release of their BlackBerry Pearl 8130 by slashing prices on their data plans. Pearl 2.0 hopefuls on Verizon’s EVDO network can expect to get their fill of email and web surfing for just $29.99 when bundled with a voice plan - $34.99 as a stand alone, unlimited data plan. It’s nowhere near T-Mobile’s $10 a month unlimited BlackBerry email plan (or their $20 unlimited web and email plan ), but if 3G web surfing and unrivaled coverage area are your thing, Verizon Wireless is your best bet.
