HTC Touch Diamond finally gets FCC approval with US 3G HSDPA support!

Well that sure took a while. As the rest of the world had the honor of being part of HTC’s launch markets for the up and coming HTC Touch Diamond, the US has had to wait for HTC to push their US-spec HTC Touch Diamond through the FCC. The HTC Touch Diamond already passed FCC [...]

HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) keyboard reviewed

The hype building around the QWERTY keyboard-toting Windows Mobile 6.1 superphones from HTC and Sony Ericsson has finally come to this - a keyboard review. Sure, it might seem that a review of just the keyboard falls seriously short of giving potential customers an idea for just how great the HTC Touch Pro (codename: Raphael) [...]

There's only one way HTC is going to meet their upgraded sales projections for the new HTC Touch Diamond over the next year - the Taiwanese manufacturer is going to have to push the HTC Touch Diamond hard in already entrenched markets as well as bring the handset to new markets. As such, the HTC [...]

HTC has apparently gotten enough positive feedback on their HTC Touch successor that they've upgraded their shipment projections for the HTC Touch Diamond. But, the most memorable comment in this whole Nokia S60 Touch vs. iPhone debacle is [...]

HTC Touch headed to Alltel

Fancy an iPhone but hate the prospect of giving in to that cult-of-Apple or jumping network-ship for AT&T? Well, if you’re a Sprint or Telus customer, then you likely already enjoying the CDMA alternative to the iPhone, the HTC Touch. Unfortunately, if you are on Alltel’s network, you’ll just have to find another way to quench your sleek, touchscreen thirst. That is, until the HTC Touch is offered on your particular flavor of CDMA. Well, you may not have to wait much longer. It looks like Alltel is set to pick up the HTC Touch – and it should hit your network in about a week. But, playing on the sharper edge of mobile technology doesn’t come cheap – expect to shell out a penny shy of $200 with 2-year contract and applicable rebates, or about $500 outright (sans contract).
Bluetooth SIG leaks another HTC NEON - HTC NEON200

Remember that recently FCC-leaked HTC NEON100? Well, we’ve barely had time to digest that little tidbit of HTC Touch-based information, and now the just-as-leaky Bluetooth SIG goes and gives us another sneak peak at another HTC NEON in the pipeline. The HTC NEON200 has surfaced at the FCC website and, like its sibling HTC NEON100, is another HTC Touch variant. Being that this leak comes from the Bluetooth SIG, we only know that the HTC NEON200 will be rocking Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. But, we’re hoping that the HTC NEON200 will pick up where the HTC NEON100 supposedly leaves off and brings a US-friendly HSDPA radio to us Yankees. We’ll just have to wait until HTC is good and ready to drop the HTC NEON (be it the NEON100 or NEON200) on us before we know anymore. It’s just a few more weeks until CES 2008. Hopefully, HTC will be bringing the HTC NEON to show off in Las Vegas.
FCC unveils HTC Neon - HTC Touch variant

What’s with HTC pushing all these unexpected handsets through the FCC’s testing labs ? We’re feeling a bit left out of the loop here. The latest HTC handset to hit the FCC’s website is the HTC “Neon.” Actually, the FCC label identifies the device as the “NEON100,” and by the looks of the image in the label, we’re going to go ahead and say that the HTC Neon is another HTC Touch variant. Word on the street also points to a possible Japanese launch on NTT DoCoMo’s network - made even more likely by the fact that this little baby just cleared Japan’s cellphone certification process. On the flip-side, we could see the HTC Neon launch Stateside with its WCDMA Band V, which is otherwise known as the 850Mhz frequency that US 3G networks are so fond of. But, we’ll wait for more info before we declare an imminent launch of an HSDPA-toting HTC Touch in the US.
Tabbed browsing on the iPhone - use tabs on iPhone Safari with Tabulate

Ok, for some strange reason, embedding the bookmarklet code into this post causes it to break. So, we’ll just link you to the Inventive Labs website, from which you can add the bookmarklet to your Safari browser. My original post is lost, so rather than try and remember exactly what I wrote, here’s a quick rundown of what Tabulate does. The iPhone Safari web browser is the singularly most enjoyable and intuitive application that I’ve ever used. But, does that close the door to improvement? No way. The browsing experience on the iPhone is great - new links open in separate windows and you can multi-task between the windows at the swipe of a finger. But, there’s no way to force an embedded link to open in the new windows (tab) or in the current window. Enter Tabulate . The genius coders over at Inventive Labs have come up with this bookmarklet, which, once loaded, gives you the option of (1) opening an embedded link within the current window (Blue icon), (2) opening an embedded link in a new window/tab (Green icon), or (3) you can flag a link for later viewing (Orange “flag” icon). You enable Tabulate by starting the bookmarklet from any webpage, after which you’ll see a little orange flag in the upper left corner of your screen - this icon tracks the number of links you have flagged for later viewing. Once tabulate is enabled, any embedded link you click will bring up a Javascript pop-up with the aforementioned options. As I mentioned, since the bookmarklet seems to break this post when I embed it, I’ll just link to the Inventive Labs website . From there, simply drag the Tabulate bookmarklet to your Safari bookmarks bar, sync your iPhone (don’t forget to check the “Sync Safari Bookmarks” box in iTunes), and open up your iPhone’s Safari browser. Simple We love the added functionality of the Tabulate bookmarlet. The only drawback is that the bookmarklet needs to be enabled for every new webpage - a slight annoyance, but worth definitely worth it. Props to the Inventive Labs coders!
Nokia files patent application for handset with fingerprint-scanning display

Here’s yet another novel patent application from Espoo. Finnish handset manufacturer, Nokia, has filed a patent application for a handset that uses a fingerprint scanner as a means of determining which user profile to display or verify security. But, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill fingerprint scanner. No, this patent application outlines a method to leverage a touch-sensitive display to pull double-duty as a fingerprint scanner. Nokia seems to be seting the stage to include more and more interesting features in its upcoming touch-based handsets . Nokia envisions a handset that would change its user interface depending on which user’s fingerprint was identified by the scanner - basically morphing the handset to a particular user’s preferences. Of course, the scanner could also be used to verify the user’s identity for security purposes. And, Nokia even makes provisions for the use of a “visual display cursor” to launch applications or features that are linked to a particular finger. Web browser? No problem, just scan your right middle-finger. Text messages? Simply scan your left ring-finger. Sounds pretty cool to us, we just hope Nokia has plans to implement this technology in future handsets. Oh, and sooner would be better than later.
T-Mobile prepping HTC Touch Dual to launch as the MDA Touch Plus with 3G!

In another move that rivals HTC’s own penchant for naming/renaming their handsets with more model-names than we care to (or can hope to) ever remember, T-Mobile has announced that they’ll be launching the HTC Touch Dual as the T-Mobile branded MDA Touch Plus. T-Mobile tends to rename their HTC-smartphones with the “MDA” moniker, so the renaming of the HTC Touch Dual isn’t all that surprising - it’s a pain to memorize all these model-names, but hey, at least T-Mobile kept the “Touch” branding. As you’ll recall, the HTC Touch Dual (codename: Nike ) is the keypad-toting, vertical-sliding sibling to the HTC Touch. T-Mobile has opted to go with the 16-key numeric keypad variant in favor of the semi-QWERTY, SureType-esque keyboard on the original HTC Touch Dual design reference - following in the footsteps of France’s Orange . And, as such, we’re expecting the T-Mobile MDA Touch Plus to rock that awesome TouchFLO interface, 400Mhz processor, 2.6 inch touchscreen display, 256MB ROM/128MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, and microSD card slot - all powered by Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional. We couldn’t find any reference to a WiFi connection in the T-Mobile MDA Touch Plus’s user-manual, so it looks like the WiFi goodness that the Japanese are enjoying won’t be making it’s way Stateside. But, we did find an interesting morsel of information regarding the T-Mobile MDA Touch Plus’s 3G aspirations! It looks like T-Mobile may be prepping the HTC-sourced handset to pull duty as a 3G handset on their very own network! The user-manual makes mention of a GPRS/3G data connection - you’ll apparently “need a data plan to use T-Mobile’s GPRS/3G network.” We’re hearing that T-Mobile won’t be launching the MDA Touch Plus anytime soon (at least not in time for Santa to put it in his sleigh), so it’s possible that T-Mobile will have gone live with their 3G network by the time this device hits the US-market. We know the HTC Touch Dual is a 3G handset - so it’s 3G capabilities aren’t in question here. The question is, what frequency will the MDA Touch Plus (and by extension, T-Mobile) be using to surf the 3G airwaves? We’ve been expecting T-Mobile to launch their 3G network on the 1700Mhz band , but contradictory reports have indicated that T-Mobile will be hopping on the 850/1900Mhz spectrum for its 3G network. We’ll just have to wait and see what T-Mobile has in plan for its US 3G plans - good thing it won’t be too long of a wait .
