Qualcomm just keeps pumping out mobile chipsets like they’re going out of style. Following on their recently announced Snapdragon chip, 45-nm 3G chip , and the recently announced dual-mode 3G chip technology , Qualcomm has unveiled their newest 3G technology with the soon-to-be-opened 700Mhz frequency spectrum. It’s widely understood that the upcoming 700Mhz spectrum auction by the FCC will give rise to mobile broadband services with better range, and so Qualcomm is preparing for the 700Mhz mobile broadband environment. The new chip, RTR6570 , will support both GSM and CDMA-based 3G technologies on the 700Mhz band - which is to say that Qualcomm’s RTR6570 3G chip will be able to surf EVDO, HSPA, and UMTS networks. And, let’s not forget to mention the 6570’s compatibility with all other 3G network frequencies - 850Mhz, 2100Mhz, and soon to be 1700Mhz (T-Mobile, we’re looking at you ) for HSPA and UMTS (GSM) networks and 1900Mhz on all EVDO (CDMA) networks. Samples of Qualcomm’s RTR6075 should start shipping in mid-2008, with production versions getting packed into 700Mhz-compatible 3G handsets by 2009 - just in time to hit Verizon’s open, “ any app, any device ,” network. Qualcomm could be helping to usher in an age of true interoperability in the US wireless landscape, and we’re seriously ready to accept an open-market with open hands. With AT&T’s high-speed upload network now online, the wireless carrier is starting to roll out wireless data HSUPA modems. AT&T’s first HSUPA data card offering was the Sierra Wireless AirCard 881 , and now they’re offering us the Sierra Wireless USBConnect 881 HSUPA USB modem to surf the full HSPA data highway. If expresscards aren’t your thing, you’ll be glad to hear that AT&T is bringing their HSPA (3G data on the upstream and downstream - HSDPA and HSUPA) network to a USB-port on Mac or Windows rig near you. Sierra Wireless Apex 880 USB HSPA modem gets official

Following up on their already impressive lineup of wireless broadband connectivity solutions, Sierra Wireless has gone official with their Apex 880 USB HSPA modem. As the model name implies, the Apex 880 uses your laptop’s (and presumably desktop, but we can’t imagine anyone using this on their desktop) USB port to pull down all that glorious data at HSPA speeds. That’s right. This sucker’s a full-fledged HSPA modem, which means you’ll be plucking bytes from the air at 7.2Mbps and pushing them out at 2Mbps (AT&T, we’re looking at you ) - forget DSL, bring on the HSPA. Oh, and the Sierra Wireless Apex 880 rocks a microSD card slot because it can’t decide if it’s a USB drive or a wireless broadband modem. The 85mm x 37.5mm x 15mm modem features a tri-band UMTS radio and even quad-band GSM/EDGE compatibility to ensure that, while you may not always get 3G speeds, you’ll never be left wishing for some sweet, sweet wireless data. Rogers Wireless announces 7.2Mbps HSPA service trials in Canada

While the US plays catch-up with Canada’s Rogers Wireless’ HSPA network , the No. 1 GSM carrier up north has just announced plans to boost its wireless broadband speeds to 7.2Mbps. The Rogers Wireless HSPA trial has gone live in Montreal and Brampton - but we’re not sure what the trial parameters are. Either way, there are going to be some happy 7.2Mbps HSPA testers in Montreal and Brampton. We just wish we could get a taste of some super-highspeed broadband from the likes of AT&T. Not that the super-high speeds will make mobile web browsing any faster - the page-viewing bottleneck usually lies in processing and rendering speeds of mobile devices, rather than the connection speed. But it’d be nice to get cable-broadband speeds over the air and onto our laptops. Enjoy that 7.2Mbps, you lucky Canadians, you.
