Sony Ericsson just launched a trio of new handsets at CES 2008 Las Vegas and we have the live pics that you’ve been waiting for. The new Sony Ericsson W760 slider is a good-looker, no doubt. There’s just something about W-series slider from SE that just looks sexy. Stefan gave the booth-representative a good amount of grief over Sony Ericsson’s choice of proprietary headphone port, but the guy just didn’t seem to understand why Stefan was right and his company was wrong. “You guys don’t use standard ports” “Sure we do, they’re all standard, all our handsets use the same dongle.” “Yea, but no other manufacturer uses it, and it’s an ugly pain in the ass.” (he may have said something about an ugly cancerous growth at some point) Great fun, indeed! The Sony Ericsson W350 aimed at the more handset-weight conscious set, while keeping external music controls easily accessible on this slightly odd flip-phone. Remember the Ericsson T28? Yea, it’s kind of reminiscent of that. And the Sony Ericsson Z555 is just plain strange. Clamshell, fashion phone, ugly. Yup, enough said. Analog shutting down with TDMA next year

Ahh, the good old days of analog… Remember your first mobile phone? Chances are, if you’re old enough to buy your own mobile phone and pay the bill, you may remember using the good, ole’ analog networks of yore. Ericsson’s T28 World phone was our first mobile phone and it was a pretty little sucker (at the time). Well, it looks like those days are about to come to an end. While some small rural carriers will be sticking with the tried and true analog technology, Alltel, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless will be shutting down their analog networks next year. Alltel will shut down its network in a three-stage process ending in September, while AT&T and Verizon Wireless will be pulling the plug a bit more abruptly. Customers of GM’s OnStar system will also feel the analog-shutdown. Customers with older OnStar systems may be left without service once the analog signals go silent. Oh GM, you guys really can’t get anything right. European Union approves Sony Ericsson, Motorola deal

Motorola has been poised to take a 50% stake in Sony Ericsson’s mobile OS, UIQ, for some time now. Motorola wants to be half-vested partners in Sony Ericsson’s UI Holdings BV, the parent company of UIQ Technology AB. The last obstacle keeping Moto from sharing the UIQ limelight with the Japanese Swedish venture was the European Union’s approval of the partnership deal. Well, Moto just got some good news in the EU’s greenlighting of the deal with the European Commission’s blessing. The EC found no antitrust tie-ups with the deal and has given the go-ahead for Motorola buy into UI Holdings and should clear the way for more innovative UIQ offerings from the mobile phone manufacturing duo. We can’t wait to see what Motorola and Sony Ericsson will bring in 2008. Sony Ericsson files patent application to bring gesture control to cameraphones

Now this is one interesting patent application. Sony Ericsson may be planning to up the ante on cameraphones if their newest patent application comes to fruition. High-end cameraphone offerings from the likes of Nokia and Sony Ericsson already boast impressive performance as far as point-and-shoot digi-cams are concerned, and Sony Ericsson seems to be brewing a unique feature for its cameraphone lineup. The USPTO has revealed a method by which simple hand-gestures could be used to control the cameraphone’s features - taking pictures, answering phone calls, and even controlling music playback with a not-so-proverbial flick of a finger. The patent involves the use of some clever software that would endow image-recognition powers to a Sony Ericsson cameraphone. The software would be used to recognize hand-gestures as a control-method for various phone features. As long as the phone is powered on and has a line-of-sight to your hand (from a table or a tripod), the user can issue a command to take a picture or start playing an MP3 track from afar. Furthermore, the phone can be connected to your DLNA home-network to control your TV, PC, audio system, etc. Imagine that - controlling your home-theater system by waving your hand through the air. As patent applications go, this one may or may not see the light of day, but we’re all crossing our fingers in hopes that it will make it into Sony Ericsson’s production line. Incredible Sony Ericsson K850i cake

What’s with all these gadget-cakes recently ? I wonder if these things taste as good as they look, but I’d be more than happy if someone made something like this Sony Ericsson K850i-cake for my, ahem, birthday next week. Of course, putting candles on something this pristine would be out of the question - which is fine by me, I’m done counting the years anyway. Take a look at the intricacy of this cake, the details are spot-on and, if this thing were a mobile phone, I’d be talking up it’s apparent build-quality and its fit-and-finish. But, seeing as how this is a cake, words like “yummy” and “too beautiful to eat” come to mind. Props to Michelle Sugar Art for crafting this amazing work of art. Sony Ericsson's patent application for dual-sliding QWERTY-keyboard and numeric keypad

Dual-sliders are nothing new . Having a dedicated numeric keypad in addition to a full-QWERTY keyboard is just so convenient. And, it seems, Sony Ericsson is giving some serious consideration to bringing that convenience to a future handset. In their patent application, entitled “Two-way sliding mobile terminal,” Sony Ericsson reveals plans to use what looks like a pop-out mechanism that features a full-QWERTY keyboard layout as well as a numeric keypad. The keyboard pops out lengthwise to become a keyboard. Holding the handset vertically, the keypad pops out widthwise. This actually looks like a way better alternative to the dual-sliding setup that we’re used to seeing . By combining the keyboard and keypad onto a single pop-out slab, Sony Ericsson’s future dual-sliding jobbies should be slimmer than the current dual-sliding offerings. We sure hope the Japanese-Swedish company will actually apply this concept to a handset in the near-term. Download the entire patent application PDF here (1.3MB). AT&T Vu, Sony Ericsson K850i, iPhone Business Edition coming soon

It looks like the AT&T Vu and Sony Ericsson K850i are going to be making their way to AT&T early next year. The AT&T Vu is basically the US-spec LG Prada (LG CU920) and should be landing on Yankee shores in January of 2008. And, to complement the fashion-forward AT&T Vu (we can’t fathom why AT&T would drop the “Prada” moniker), AT&T will be bringing the Sony Ericsson K850i to the US masses as the Sony Ericsson “Ansel” (we know, what is AT&T thinking?) in March. But, the gem that caught our eye was the business-targetted iPhone. That’s right, AT&T is going to be leveraging the iPhone to enterprise customers. The mention of “evolve applications” makes us believe that AT&T and Apple are working on making the iPhone play nice with corporate email servers - perhaps in time for the official iPhone SDK release next year? The iPhone already has built-in Yahoo! IMAP email support, so corporate email niceties should be just a stone’s throw away. We can’t wait for AT&T upcoming lineup. They’ve already got their bases covered with the AT&T Tilt , iPhone, and the plethora of monoblocks and clamshells in their stable, and with the recently green-lighted Dobson acquisition, the LG Prada and SE K850i should cement Big Blue’s position at the head of the US wireless table. J.D. Power ranks Sony Ericsson highest in Customer Satisfaction

With all their proprietary formats and hardware, we wouldn’t have thought that the Sony Ericsson experience would be at the top of the list. But, we would be wrong. J.D. Power has just named Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications as the US and Canadian leader in overall customer satisfaction in terms of handsets. The J.D. Power survey ranking is based on mobile phone features, battery life, physical design, operation and durability among U.S. consumers. It looks like Sony Ericsson’s commitment to the North American market has paid off. In contrast, the company’s wireless retail experience was ranked “low and eroding” just last month. And, it turns out that Motorola and Samsung ranked above industry-average, while Nokia and LG ranked slightly lower than the average. Kudos to Sony Ericsson for their “satisfying” handsets. Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 Bluetooth headset quitely released

We’re used to manufacturers flooding the interwebs with press releases and pictures of their newest product launch, but it seems Sony Ericsson has decided to take the more modest approach. Hidden within a press release for their Sony Ericsson K660i is a mid-range Bluetooth headset - the Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 Bluetooth headset. The Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 Bluetooth headset isn’t that much of a looker - it’s a mid-level model, after all - but it boasts some fairly impressive battery life. A full-charge is good for 10 hours of talk-time or 350 hours of standby-time, so you’ll likely never miss a call for want of power. The Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 also features automatic pairing, voice dialing, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. We’re expecting the Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 Bluetooth headset to drop in Q1 2008, price is not yet known. Sony Ericsson M610i LIZY smartphone prototype on sale on eBay Germany

Remember that Sony Ericsson M610i LIZY prototype that was floating around the internets? Well, it seems some enterprising eBayer has put their pre-production M610i up for auction. With the Sony Ericsson M610i already having passed FCC inspection , we gotta believe that the business-centric smartphone could be headed Stateside sometime soon. But, if you just need to have the latest and greatest, head on over to eBay Germany and grab the Sony Ericsson M610i LIZY prototype for 1000EUR (Buy-It-Now price). Just remember, this WiFi-packing smartphone with semi-QWERTY keyboard and FM radio only rocks a tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900Mhz) radio. On the other hand, we’re hearing that Sony Ericsson has a major handset announcement a week from now (November 6). So you might want to hold off on that $1000+ eBay purchase for now - as soon as the Sony Ericsson M610i hits the mainstream, that prototype won’t be all that cool anymore.
