Forget multi-tasking, push background notification is where it’s at. With the limited resources available to mobile devices, running multiple applications in the background can tax the CPU, drain the battery faster, and lead to system instability as multiple applications fight for memory allottment and CPU cycles. Apple has seeded a new iPhone 2.1 OS SDK beta [...]

The recently released iPhone 2.1 firmware beta has, like many beta firmwares before it, been a rewarding source of potentially upcoming iPhone features and functionality. Previous iPhone firmware betas have led to the speculation, and eventual implementation, of iPhone features like the iPhone iTunes remote, geo-tagging photos, and character-recognition, just to name a few. With the [...]

Sprint sure got that new firmware out fast. Following on the firmware problems that left the door open to let the common user access an engineering menu and wiping their handset clean of any firmware bits, Sprint and LG have already released the fixed-up firmware for LG Rumor users to download post-haste. The new firmware is available to Sprint’s LG Rumor owners and is an OTA (over-the-air) download, so updating your LG Rumor is as easy as a couple button-presses.
Update your LG Voyager's firmware at the nearest Verizon Wireless Store

If you’re the proud owner of Verizon’s newest flagship handset, you may have noticed a couple niggles with the LG Voyager ’s user interface. Well, you’re not the only ones to have noticed - it seems Verizon’s been hard at work to make sure that Voyager delivers an experience that rivals the iPhone’s (even with a pressure-based touchscreen). It’s been on market for barely a month now and Verizon Wireless has already issued an update to the LG Voyager’s firmware. You do have to get your lazy bum down to a brick-and-mortar Verizon Wireless Store in order to update your LG Voyager with the latest bits, but we hear it should be worth it. Longer battery life, better browsing experience, more applications accessible from the external touchscreen, functional Google Maps - they’re all in the cards for the LG Voyager. Here’s a rundown of the complete firmware updates for the LG Voyager:

Fixed issue with V CAST Music and 4GB+ removable memory read error

Adds ability to reset V CAST Mobile TV client

Update power settings to improve battery life performance

Bluetooth enhancements to audio, pairing, and key tone

Mobile Web - HTML browser enhancements

Fixed to display ?=? symbol on the bottom in the calculator for LG Joy font

Fixed to access to keypad through only one step while in a call

Fixed the auto lock setting so that the touch screen will not lock on its own when auto lock is set to off

Fixed to allow ESPN application on external touch screen

Apple prepping iPhone v1.1.3 firmware with voice recording and disk mode?

Those lucky French. The iPhone landed on French soil merely a week ago and it seems that Apple is already prepping an iPhone firmware update. The new v1.1.3 firmware is rumored to be getting the final touches to launch on Saturday, December 8 - and we’re expecting an Apple-sanctioned voice-recording application and a disk-mode function. Thanks for the great “Vnotes” app, Erica Sadun. We’ve been using your application to great effect over the past few months, but if Apple brings their own voice recording app to the iPhone, we’re going to have to jump ship and use the official Apple app. Oh, and disk-mode? Be still our geeky hearts! Here’s the translated text from Cnet France : “According to various rumors, it’s next Saturday that should leave the new firmware of the iPhone. This version 1.1.3 provides two major innovations: dictaphone function and the ability to use the telephone as an Apple hard drive. Indeed, the version 1.1.3 of the firmware, due at the end of the week, will mark a turning point since the iPhone will dictaphone and can be used as an external hard drive. ITunes requires, it will be impossible to directly transfer music and videos as with any other player. However, we can transfer documents more easily and content of the telephone network will be accessible. “ We’ve got high hopes for this rumor. After all, the new features aren’t exactly groundbreaking, and they’re completely in line with features that we’ve expected from the beginning. Give it a few days, we’ll have our answer soon enough.
