Here we go again - Opera files complaint against Microsoft in European Union

What is this, 1993 ? Microsoft is again the target of market-position abuse complaints in the European Union. Opera, maker of our favorite mobile browser, has filed a complaint with the European Commission against the software giant for abusing their dominant market position. Apparently, Opera isn’t liking Microsoft’s practice of bundling their Internet Explorer browser with Windows. Futhermore, Microsoft is accused of stifling interoperability by skirting accepted internet-language standardization. Opera wants Microsoft to relent and give users a true choice in which browser they want to use. “We are filing this complaint on behalf of all consumers who are tired of having a monopolist make choices for them,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera. “In addition to promoting the free choice of individual consumers, we are a champion of open web standards and cross-platform innovation. We cannot rest until we’ve brought fair and equitable options to consumers worldwide.” If Opera gets its way, the European Commission would force Microsoft to unbundle its Internet Explorer browser with Windows and possibly even offer alternative browser choices within Windows. We’re with Opera all the way on this one. Internet Explorer doesn’t follow internet-standards and causes more headaches for coders/developers/designers than most people will ever know. It requires more time and money to ensure that webpages will render correctly in IE, and ultimately wastes unnecessary time. The revolution has begun - again! Viva la Opera!
Opera Mobile named 'Best Windows Mobile Browser'

It’s official. Well, at least as far as Smartphone and PocketPC Magazine is concerned. Opera Mobile has been named the “best mobile browser for both Windows-based Pocket PC and Smartphones at the 2007 Best Software Awards by Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine.” We should note that the Opera Mobile browser was nominated to compete against its sister-browser, the Opera Mini browser, and the Thunderhawk browser in the Internet Browser and Web Utilities category. Opera Mobile took top honors in the competition over Opera Mini and Skweezer. “Fourteen independent Windows Mobile experts selected Opera Mobile as the winner in the all-important Internet Browser category in the 2007 Best Software Awards. Congratulations to the Opera Mobile team,” says Hal Goldstein, Executive Editor, Awards Administrator, Smartphone & Pocket PC magazine. The results highlighted Opera Mobile’s Flash support, page-rendering capabilities, tabbed browsing, and dual-viewing modes as helping secure Opera Mobile’s position as the “best” - and we tend to agree. As much as we love Opera Mini , and we do love it , Opera Mobile is the more powerful browser. If you’re handset can handle it, and you don’t mind paying for it, Opera Mobile is the way to go. Download Opera Mobile here .
Opera Mini 4 goes gold!

That’s right. After a successful beta program, the good folks at Opera have just taken their prized Opera Mini browser to an official gold-status. That means this baby’s ready to rock your mobile-world with a solid, stable, desktop-like, mobile-browsing solution. The Opera Mini 4 browser is Opera’s push to bring the feel of browsing the web on your desktop to your tiny mobile device’s screen. We’ve already mentioned the added benefits of using Opera Mini 4 over your sorry-excuse for a built-in web-browser, so we’ll just say that Opera Mini 4 is where you want to be, hands down.
