Synchronizing all your contacts, calendar items, bookmarks, music, and photos from your Mac to your iPhone is just about as simple a process as you could ask for. But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. One thing that would make the sync-ing process even simpler and hassle-free is the addition of a wireless iTunes synchronization solution. Well, Mac developer francisois agrees. He’s working on iPhone iSync to bring WiFi-based iTunes synchronization to the iPhone. So far, iPhone iSync will sync a specified folder on your Mac to your iPhone (and even iPod Touch) over a WiFi connection. The logical extension of this software would be to bring iTunes-based wireless sync to the iPhone. francisois says that he’s working to make the iPhone iSync software work with the current version of iTunes. And, to his credit, he says that he’s “reached a breakthrough that has allowed me to synchronize my own iPod Touch over wi-fi with an older version of iTunes.” Compatibility with iTunes 7.5 should be on the horizon, which should see music, photos, contacts, and bookmarks wirelessly synchronized to the iPhone. He’s looking for help in breaking down the walls to iTunes 7.5, so if you’re handy with “shell scripts and ssh and especially iTunes library access,” francisois could use your help. T-Mobile unlocks German iPhones through iTunes - official iPhone unlocking hack on the way?

We all know by now that T-Mobile Germany has been forced to offer carrier-unlocked iPhones to its customers. But, until now, we had no idea how Apple and T-Mobile would go about unlocking those 999 Euro (about $1,500 USD) iPhones. Well, thanks to well-heeled iPhone hopefuls with the bankroll and desire to own an iPhone that can work on any GSM network in the world, we now know just how Apple will go about unlocking said iPhones. It seems that Apple’s own iTunes activation-setup has been modified to unlock those premium iPhones upon approval from Cupertino. Anyone looking to purchase an uber-expensive, unlocked iPhone from T-Mobile Germany will be given a run-of-the-mill, locked iPhone. The IMEI number is sent to Apple for remote-unlocking approval. Within 24 hours, Apple will send the unlocked iPhone owner an email confirming their unlocked status. Then, a simple iTunes-sync will result in a SIM-unlocked iPhone with the v1.1.2 firmware. Pretty simple, eh? We think so too. And, with an Apple-sanctioned unlock method for the iPhone (one that doesn’t risk bricking your iPhone with every firmware update), we figure the iPhone Dev Team is hard at work trying to reverse-engineer the Apple unlock process. If Apple was fool-hardy enough to hide some iPhone-unlocking code into iTunes, the iPhone community could have an official, non-bricking iPhone unlock solution in the near future. We’ll be keeping our ears to the ground on this one, folks. The latest iPhone update didn’t really do anything impressive for our iPhones. Sure, that TIFF-image security hole was patched, but it was more of a headache for third-party iPhone developers than anything else. Or was it? One iPhone hacker noticed that the last iPhone update contained some interesting code hidden within. These code strings seem to indicate (and confirm previous rumors) that Apple is cooking up some sort of online-based (most likely iTunes-based) rental scheme. O2's iPhone activation system buckling under pressure

Remember when the iPhone launched in the States ? Remember how AT&T’s activation servers buckled under the massive deluge of launch-day iPhone owners trying to get their iPhone activated? Well, it seems activation-problems have crossed the pond and are afflicting O2’s iPhone activation servers. With O2 selling iPhones like it’s nobody’s business , we’re not too surprised to hear that their activation system is having trouble handling the load. Some newly-minted iPhone owners in the UK have reported that the activation process crashes after they enter their credit-card information in the iTunes-based activation process. The problems seem to be rooted in O2’s activation servers and not from Apple or iTunes. Apparently, the activation woes stem from low-credit users trying to activate their iPhone. You see, the activation system will check the user’s credit and require a £100 deposit payment if the user’s credit-score is not up to par. The activation system seems to be having trouble dealing with processing this particular payment. We’d love to get an idea for how widespread this problem is.
